This is a rather bizzare movie on the life of the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. Then again, perhaps it would be borderline impossible for anyone to conceive of a movie about Mahler which was not bizarre. The movie makes an attempt to reconstruct the psychology of an artistic genius, one who was so inspired by the works of Beethoven, Wagner, Goethe, Nietzsche & Novalis.

The film takes place aboard a train; Mahler and his wife are both travelling on board. The trainride sees Mahler indulge in a number of flashbacks and nightmares, all of which provide the vehicle for Ken Russell to divulge the more salient episodes of Mahler’s life. Among these are his childhood artistic inspirations, the rocky relationships he had with his wife & family and the unfortunate but infamous encounter he had with the emperor of Austria.

As a biography of a composer, this one does not rank up there with “Amadeus,” “Immortal Beloved” or Richard Burton’s “Wagner.” However, it does do a credible job of engaging some of the more memorable epochs of his life, as well as his incessant infatuation with death. There are also some intentional anachronisms, such as his “meeting” with Cosima Wagner.

Far more important though, is the introspective look which the movie offers on the isolated existence of a tormented genius. The continual anguish of this friendly, misanthropic megalomaniac is felt throughout. Someone once asked Mahler, “How could a man as kind-hearted as you have written a symphony so full of suffering?” “It is,” replied Mahler, “the sum of all the suffering I have been compelled to endure at the hands of life.” Such is the theme of this movie. Such was the theme of Mahler’s life. It is a theme sometimes gruesome, sometimes hauntingly beautiful, and always gripping. See this movie, and hear the theme for yourself.

Film auteur Ken Russell made at least six biographical movies about celebrated composers, three of which enjoyed commercial release in the United States: “The Music Lovers,” about Tchaikovsky; “Mahler,” about its titular subject; and “Lisztomania,” really about Wagner as much as it was about Liszt. Unseen in commercial release in North America (and unseen by me) are studies of Frederick Delius, Sir Arnold Bax, and Bela Bartók. Known for his extravagance - and, let us be honest, his vulgarity - Russell nevertheless believes passionately in these projects and endows his composer-artists with an especially powerful aura. (At one point, in the late 1960s, Russell apparently tried to help in the promotion of Lyrita’s release of symphonies by Bax, although his plan was eventually scuttled by Lyrita’s management.) The Tchaikovsky, Liszt, and Mahler films are all studies in the link between neurosis and creativity and portray the artist not merely as a social outcast, unfit really for society, but as a martyr to his own talent, which inevitably consumes him. “Mahler” (1974), as fantastic as portions of it might be, maintains the closest marriage with reality. Robert Powell (famously Jesus in Zeffirelli’s film of that name) as Mahler represents perfect casting. For one thing, he looks the part. British beauty Georgina Hale (where is she twenty-five years later?) is alternately innocent and whorish as Alma Schindler, who, twenty years younger, became Mahler’s wife only to betray him, as Mahler perhaps betrayed her, too. There is enough neurosis in their story to go around. Russell gives us not so much a straight narrative as a series of vignettes in flashback from Mahler’s point of view as he returns by train to Vienna for the last time in 1911, the year of his death. Using Bernard Haitink’s recordings of the Mahler symphonies (with the Concertgebouw Orchestra), Russell illustrates the music in the visual fantasies or episodes that make up the film. Examples? To the apocalyptic “organ chord” from the First Movement of the Tenth Symphony, we see Mahler’s lakeside hut at Maiernegg burst into flames; then a cocooned female figure gradually emerges from her chrysalis in a weird ballet. To the death-march on “Frère Jacques” from the First Symphony, with its interruptions by an oompah-ing klezmer band, we see Mahler watching his own funeral and interment helplessly, his coffin carried by black-uniformed SS men while Alma, in matching SS miniskirt and jackboots, does a lewd dance on the grave. In a crucifixion scene accompanied by bleeding chunks from Wagner’s “Ring,” Cosima Wagner, the Mistress of Bayreuth, gives him a pass for being circumcised, then compels him to eat pork, thus licensing him to conduct the most Teutonic of Teutonic music. (This follows the announcement of the composer’s conversion to Catholicism - as I said, nothing is too vulgar for Russell.) For the “Veni, Creator Spiritus” from the Eighth Symphony, Russell gives us a cinematic suite of Gustave Doré engravings based on Dante’s “Paradiso.” And so it goes. At one point, a reporter claiming to be “Ernst Krenek” bursts into Mahler’s Pullman compartment. (The real Ernst Krenek would have been about three years old at the time.) What holds the sequence together is the music in combination with Powell’s remarkable performance. He even convinces when he undertakes the thankless job of conducting an unseen (and of course nonexistent) orchestra for the camera. (We all do it, but none of us wants to be photographed while doing it.) While room remains for as less surreal treatment of Mahler, Russell’s, despite its eccentricity, is still a worthy attempt. Aficionados of Mahler will especially want to have it. I recommend it with the cautions implicit in what has gone before.

at first, I was skeptical bout this release. having only seen Greg when he was roasting someone. but after watching this dvd. I was relieved to see that Greg Girado has a presence on stage. I’m not going to give out any jokes because that would just be mean. but check it out. you will laugh your ass off.

He skillfully tricks you into believing he’s just your average comedian whose performance is ridden with cliche narratives of the American cultural landscape. But you’ll soon find you’ve been fooled. I find the more aware a comedian, the better he is. He must take risks with the audience. Sometimes he must trust that his audience is not vanilla but again we’re not sick pervs either. With awareness of this, Giraldo is able to become several great comedians at once with material that is crude (Stanhope) and political (Maher, Stewart). He also does numerous pieces that make fun of our use of language, reminiscent of the late Carlin. Nevertheless Giraldo is not just a mish-mesh of other comedians, he masterly weaves everything in a special way. Each joke is not random, he’s telling a story that hopefully should vibrate with the younger generations.

Has there ever been a more surreal and bizarre opening sequence to any show ever made in America than that of PEE WEE’S PLAYHOUSE? The Surrealists felt that one of the keys of art lay in our dreams, and the intro to this show seems like a happy nightmare of sorts. The music, Pee Wee’s odd vocal interjections, the variety of visual images, the introduction of the strange group of inhabitants living in the playhouse, all combine to announce to the would-be viewer that his was a show that wasn’t going to go down any path that had been traveled by any previous show.

For five seasons beginning in 1986, this was simply one of the most amazing shows TV has ever produced. Paul Reubens was amazing as Pee Wee Herman, literally a child with the appearance of an adult, who was a veritable encyclopedia of irritating habits that kids can assume, with every annoying verbal come a kid has ever used. Armed with a great group of writers, a stellar cast, and some remarkable set and character designers, this show did things that no kid’s show had ever done before or has done sense, though the influence on the more anarchistic line of kid’s cartoons can still be detected. I would be willing to be that the makers of shows like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS are fans of Pee Wee.

Unfortunately, this all came crashing to an end when a sex scandal caused CBS to pull the show off TV. In fact, before the scandal they had already ceased making new episodes of the show. But the incident did two things: 1) it caused CBS to cease showing the show in reruns and 2) killed off any future use of the Pee Wee character by Reubens. The series has been re-released on video, though it has been out of print for a number of years, and because of the sexual nature of Reubens demise, few networks have been willing to rebroadcast the show. Until this DVD release, PEE WEE has been more or less unavailable to the public.

Although Paul Reubens dominated the show as Pee Wee, the show is amazing today for the remarkable amount of talent on the show. Over the years I have been amazed at how many people remember Cowboy Curtis from the show, but are unaware that Laurence Fishburne portrayed him. Captain Carl was played by Phil Hartman before he went on to star on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE for years. The second actor to play the King of Cartoons was William Marshall, star Blaxploitation cult classic vampire film BLACULA. Natasha Lyonne, who played Opal, went on to additional success as a child actress and as a young adult, including THE SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS and BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER. S. Epatha Merkerson, who played Reba the letter carrier, has gone on to a long career on LAW AND ORDER. And of course the woman who made Pee Wee’s heart skip a beat, the beautiful Miss Yvonne, was played by Lynne Marie Stewart, who has gone on to plays a host of supporting roles on TV and in film. All in all, you have to acknowledge that this was far from a normal children’s cast.

But it wasn’t merely the human cast that made this show so remarkable. Inhabiting Pee Wee’s playhouse were an extraordinarily odd group of denizens, from Pterri the Pterodactyl to Mr. Kite to Mr. Windows to Cool Cat and talking chairs, flowers, and fish. Conky the Robot would each week dispense that show’s secret word, a stunt seemed designed to irritate parents’ as much as possible. One of my favorite recurring characters was the Salesman, whose appearance at Pee Wee’s door would cause panic and disconcerted screaming each week. And how could you describe Jambi to someone who hadn’t seen the show before? A disembodied genie’s head who each week could solve whatever problems facing either Pee Wee or his friends with those amazing words, “Mekka Lekka Hi-Mekka Hiney Ho!”

I’m delighted that these are available now on DVD. A whole generation of kids has passed not knowing what a great thing they missed. Kids who are in high school today have only a vague idea about Pee Wee, though they might know his two movies. For many he was someone whose career ended because he did something very, very bad, though not many seem to know what that was. Now we get to see all of these great shows again, and they get to discover him for the first time.

A must have for any DVD library, this groundbreaking, innovative series, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, was created and produced by the genius of Paul Reubens who also stars as pop culture icon, Pee-wee Herman. Pee-wee’s Playhouse is marked by a campy sensibility and frequent use of double entendre, engaging viewers of all ages.

Incorporating clips from vintage cartoons, 3-D animation, hand puppets, marionettes, and a cast of endearingly eccentric memorable characters, Pee-wee’s Playhouse is non-stop fun that might best be described as a wild mix of Mr. Rogers, The Wizard of Oz and MTV. Each episode, Pee-wee Herman welcomes you into his kaleidoscope, fantasy clubhouse for adventure through a labyrinth of zany characters and sci-fi inventions. Music for the shows was provided by cutting edge artists such as Mark Mothersbaugh, Todd Rundgren, Danny Elfman, and Van Dyke Parks.

This set of DVD releases divides all 5 years (45 episodes) of the Playhouse into 2 affordable box sets (which includes 8 lost episodes) in all their side splitting hilarity sparkling in never before seen DVD clarity.

Also, check out the newly released DVD of Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special — a charming, star-studded Christmas classic.

Imagine that a nukeular bomb went off and suddenly there was only one girl left in the world and you were one of two guys. How hard do you think the two of you would fight over that girl? That’s the question posed by this excellent Roger Corman explotation film. Of course the girl is gorgeous and of course the guys come up w ith ever more ingenious ways to get her attention. This is a classic black and white “B” movie.

I’ve been a fan of Roger Corman films since the first time I saw Little Shop of Horrors on WPIX when I was about 10. Since then I’ve done my best to see all of his films that I can.

The ground rolling beneath, before and beyond:

Their journey meanders”

For me this sums up the atmosphere of “Kino’s journey” - this is a poetic, but unpretenious series. The viewer follows Kino, a young girl, and her motoraide as they drift from country to country, staying three days in each to soak up the culture and understand the ways of the people that live within them. Each country is vastly different with extremely different political, technological, and moral standards.

The series manages something rarely attainable in anime - interesting, mysterious, and intelligent storylines that make the viewer really think about the world around them, but without being overly complex and confusing. The makers of ther series also do not force their viewpoints on the viewer; instead the makers present the information and leave the viewer to judge the standards of each country themselves. The series also benefits from having a truly likeable heroine, who is not girly but worldly and capable.

This may sound boring, but believe me it is not. After the second episode, I was as eager as Kino to visit the next country and uncover their culture. The stories are genuinely moving, unpredictable, and sometimes heartbreaking. There is action as Kino sometimes finds herself in danger and some unexpected brutal images. The graphics are beautiful and modern. The soundtrack and dubbing are excellent.

This is not a funny or romantic series and there are no mecha battles. However, if you want to try a series (13 episodes) that treats the viewer with some intelligence and is genuinely interesting that you should definitely buy this. Similiar to Haibane Renmei in tone and graphics, but more down-to-earth. I watched the whole series in one day and afterwards felt like packing a bag and invesitgating the world myself.

What intrigued me most about Kino’s Journey was the fact that the leading character was an androgynous looking female on a journey with her talking motorcycle. Just reading about it, the story sounds strange but once you start watching it, it makes sense in the world it takes place in. The world Kino lives in is almost like our own, except that each country Kino visits seems to be at a different stage of civilization. You could say Kino’s world was tailor made just for us to learn the moral lessons it’s trying to teach. Through Kino’s journey we come face to face with human desires that can either lead a country into destruction or into a new age of change. Our main character is Kino who is unflinching in her resolve to continue her journey and tries to keep herself uninvolved from the fate of those people she meets. It is refreshing to finally see a character that isn’t so self-righteous to think she has the answers for everybody’s problems. Kino’s motorcycle Hermes is a good vehicle for seeing the puzzling world from a non-human perspective. None of the character designs are particularly attractive nor does the animation impress any veteran anime viewer. But the unique approach of looking at human nature without the preachiness of other shows makes Kino worth a look.

Sword of Doom is the best of the non Akira Kurosawa Samurai films. The action sequences are phenomonal, and the setting is so atmospheric and beautiful it leaves you entranced. The snow scene where our anti-hero meets with his kharmic opposite for the first time (Mifune Toshiro) has to be the most beautiful setting for a battle I have ever seen. The story is of a thoughtful swordsman who is evil, yet unlike so many other films where there is no character or depth to a villains evil we really get to know Ryunesuke. His Father comments that he is fascinated with evil and therefore he has sought it out and now it has overcome him. We later see examples of his swordstyle even affected by his soul. He kills people that ask to be killed without thinking twice, and all in all he is a complex swordsmen who can’t necessarily be written off as just an evil person. The ending leaves you gasping for more, wich I am told exists you just have to read the books or speak fluent japanese to see the rest. A must see. I recommend it highly.

The actions of a man can describe the man’s true identity, as the identity of righteousness and moral character are a reflection of a man’s actions. Bushido expresses honor before living, which was the way of the samurai. This honor seemed to fade away, as large numbers of samurai without masters accrued in cities and other locations around Japan during the 1860s. At the end of the shogunate in 1868, which also changed the importance of the samurai in the Japanese society, warfare began a drastic change from swords to guns and cannons. The end of samurai also indicated an end to bushido, which lead many samurai into a more corrupt lifestyle where honor no longer had the same meaning.

Sword of Doom opens in the spring of 1860 where a young woman and her grandfather climb a mountain pass where the grandfather is ruthlessly murdered without any apparent reason by the film’s antihero, Ryunosuke Tsukue (Tatsuya Nakadai). Ryunosuke is the symbolic embodiment of the unification of steel and man, as it often was taught by sword masters that one must become one with the sword in order to reach perfection. When Ryunosuke callously let his sword fall over the girl’s grandfather a small bell falls on the rocks, which unsettles him. However, it seems to be the last time that Ryunosuke will show emotion.

Later in the story the audience gets to meet the sword master and teacher Toranosuke Shimada (Toshirô Mifune) who suggests, “The sword is the soul. Study the soul to know the sword. Evil mind, evil sword.” Fundamentally, Toranosuke points out the old way of the samurai where the samurai is one with the sword, as the sword is only an extension of the samurai. Thus, if the man is evil then the sword does evil. It also implies that the sword is as guilty as the samurai Further interpretations of Toranosuke’s statement could suggest that substantial responsibility and honor come with carrying a sword, as one carries life at the end of the sword. Toranosuke embraces the values of Bushido as he teaches his student the way of the samurai through fencing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Sword of Doom - Criterion Collection! Click Here

A more contemporary notion suggests that the mind guides the sword to its target, as the sword is cold, distant, and without judgment. Nonetheless, the sword and other weapons continue to reap new victims such as the grandfather in the beginning of the film. Ryunosuke’s fencing technique, which many do not recognize as the samurai are all of the old and traditional ways, appears cold, strange, and uncanny to those who see him fight, as they wonder where the source of his technique originates. This brings the notion to the beginning of the film where Ryunosuke kills the grandfather, which seems to be the moment when he perfects his fencing style, a style that seems detached, callous, and without empathy, which seems to be derived from the sword itself. The story develops this idea even further by displaying Ryunosuke as a calculated and unsympathetic sociopath.

After Ryunosuke returns from the mountain pass he is to fight in a sword contest the following day against Bunnojo Utsuki (Ichirô Nakaya). Bunnojo’s wife, Hama (Michiyo Aratama), visits with Ryunosuke in order to convince him that her husband must win in order to save her family’s face. This meeting leads Hama to face Ryunosuke’s coldhearted personality, as he demands her to offer herself to him. After much contemplation Hama visits Ryunosuke in a mill during the night before his sword contest. In the morning Hama is approached by Bunnojo who tells her that he has announced their divorce earlier the same morning, as he knows about what she had done. Anger and pride consume Bunnojo who decides to kill Ryunosuke in the sword contest as payment for his insolence. However, Bunnojo has no chance against Ryunosuke’s strange and distant fencing style.

The story continues to surround Ryunosuke who goes into hiding with Hama, as he continues to lend out his sword to those who are willing to pay. It leads the audience into a downward spiraling tale in which the audience can sense the outcome of Ryunosuke’s life. Nonetheless, it is never certain what will happen as director Kihachi Okamoto continues to darken the atmosphere while the tale unfolds. Death is dealt without consideration to whomever he is told to slay, as he stares down the eyes of those who gradually sink to the ground with a deep and deadly cut in their flesh.

In the backdrop of Ryunosuke there is a samurai uprising that he seems to be involved in while the brother of Bunnojo intends to seek an honorable revenge by killing him. The young woman who found her grandfather dead in the mountain pass enters the story, as the past seems to catch up with Ryunosuke. These elements are tied together through Ryunosuke’s existence, as he continues to kill for the highest payer. The continuation of Ryunosuke ruthlessness encourages the audience to think that his destiny must eventually catch up with him and make a full circle. Lastly, Ryunosuke seems to be a personification of the shogunate, which we know died at the end of the 1860s.

Sword of Doom is a marvelously framed film with several intriguing shots that show a meticulous eye for details. Many of the scenes have wonderful mise-en-scene that elevates the authenticity of the story, which is brought together with a well-performing cast. The contrasts between Tatsuya Nakadai’s character Ryunosuke and Toshirô Mifune’s performance as Toranosuke visually bring out the different personalities in these two characters. It is essential to see this contrast, as it provides an insightful view into how different these two are while being very much the same. Much of the film’s chemistry rests on these two characters, even though Toshirô Mifune is used sparsely throughout the film. The unfolding Sword of Doom brings the audience a violent cinematic experience, which offers a historical tale with depth and reflection.

This is one of those few movies where everything that everyone says about it is precisely true: Utterly barebones production, flatly pathetic acting, stilted and pointless dialogue, and lots and lots of ultra-phony gore. Of course, this is pretty undisputedly the first real gore film, so horror fans pretty much have to see this. And, even if it weren’t so important historically it would be worth seeing anyway, cause it’s pretty damn cool either way.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blood Feast! Click Here

Fortunately, in making the first gore film they didn’t go halfway. Sure, there are tons of films which are gorier then it now, it’s still gory enough that if it were redone, shot for shot with realistic, modern effects, it wouldn’t be allowed an R rating in a million years. You got flaying, leg severing, heart extracting, tongue ripping, brain, um, snatching etc. And, while the gore effects are incredibly dated, they aren’t quite as cheap and old as I would have imagined. The blood itself actually holds up fairly well, and looks better than much of the stage blood you’d see over the next 20 years or so. It’s actually red! It is also delightfully shameless, perpetually leering at the simplistic effects in a way that makes Fulci look almost reserved by comparison. For example, fairly late in the film there is a 42 second pan over a flaying victim. (i.e. someone just covered with fake blood) 42 seconds may not sound that long when I just say it, but when you’re actually watching it it’s pretty damn funny, and seems to go on forever. It’s also got some odd quirks, such as how virtually all the violence is performed in utter silence, with no sound effects, only music. It manages to make these scenes somehow poignant, in spite of the overall laughable nature of the project.

The film only gets 3 stars because much of the terrible acting and dialogue grows somewhat tiresome after a while. There are only a few topics: The cops whine about how they can’t catch the mad butcher who is killing women, and stealing their body parts, and the civilains whine about there’s a killer out there, and then reflect happily on the party they plan to have that Saturaday. (Turns out that the guy who’s catering the party, Fuad Ramses, is the killer, and is gonna feed them the parts he stole. What a coincidence.) The directing is also amusingly flat. The camera hardly ever moves, nor do the actors. They just stand there, statue-stiff, delivering there lines. It’s also got a fun soundtrack, with endless thumping tympani and cheesy organs and such. Lotsa people are irritated by it, but I find it quite amusing.

Yeah, you know if you wanna see this or not. So do it.

Grade: C

“Blood Feast” is the most famous work of exploitation auteur Herschell Gordon Lewis. Released in 1963, it is considered the first slasher film, the one that spawned all of the imitators: “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “Friday the 13th”, etc. Despite (or because of) its questionable acting and really fake blood, it is a classic.

Something Weird Video has given “Blood Feast” a great tribute with its DVD version. A beautiful print of the film was used, all of the garish colors are presented in their full glory. It contains one of the most interesting audio commentaries on a DVD that I have ever listened to. Director Herschell Gordon Lewis and producer David F. Friedman provide insights into everything you’ve ever wanted to know about “Blood Feast” - the casting, the special effects, the creation of Lewis’ signiature music score, and much more. There are so many great anecdotes shared on the commentary: how Pine Sol was used to get rid of the smell of the sheep tongue (used for the infamous tongue removal scene) since it was being stored in a refrigerator and the power went out, how they had to spend money on a freeze frame at the optical effects lab because an actress pretending to be dead couldn’t hold her breath (you can see her failed attempts in the collection of nearly 50-minutes of outtakes included on the DVD), a pizza parlor was used for the scene where the maniacal Fuad Ramses cooks a human leg in an oven, and how they first realized the film was going to be a phenomenon when they got stuck in a traffic jam on the way to its Peoria, Illinois drive-in premiere. P.S. - Bonus for trivia buffs: Robert Sinise, the editor of “Blood Feast”, is the father of actor Gary Sinise.

The DVD of “Blood Feast” is a must own for fans of the film and film buffs thanks to the great quality of the film to DVD transfer and the extras included by Something Weird Video.

“How Hitler Lost the War” is one of the outstanding documentaries I’ve seen on World War II. I originally taped this show off PBS when it first appeared in 1989, and have watched it several times since then. Produced by David Hoffman and narrated by Norman Rose, the program has a weighty and authoritative flare. Once you start watching you can’t stop until you see the conclusion.

Recently, I copied my old VHS tape onto DVD so I’d have a better and more permanent record. This included Titles at various points in the program so I could more easily find parts of the show I wanted to review. Sadly, though, my tape quality was not the highest which makes this new production such a welcome find. Its audio and video are topnotch, as you might expect from DVD.

The central theme of the show is how Hitler lost a war that the Germans may have already won through his vacillation and stubbornness. He dallied and delayed as key points in the war were reached on both the Eastern and Western fronts. Hitler issued orders that resulted in the loss of whole armies in defiance of advice he received from his military experts. And finally, to our deliverance, he refused to use properly the wonder weapons he yearned for when they were right in front of him.

Among the other most memorable features of this program are the interviews done with soldiers and airmen from both the German and Allied sides. All of these men are surely dead now, but their words live on describing the most terrible conflict in history. Their accounts are available to us and future generations in this indelible form. Especially vivid are pictures drawn of the Eastern Front and the suffering and loss of human life on both sides. Today’s problems seem small by comparison, and yet, the sacrifices made to rid the world of Nazism must not be forgotten, lest they might have to be repeated.

Unfortunately, the new DVD does not carry titles or chapters as most DVD’s do these days. Rather, it runs the full 67 minutes without interruption. Too bad, but what do you expect for the super bargain price of $6.99? If it weren’t for this flaw I would have rated the production 5 stars, rather than 4. Still, the content is the most important thing and someone who doesn’t have this video in his World War II collection should run, not walk, to order a copy.

I got this DVD by chance, and that was real luck. It can be seen as a type of missing link that explains why the initial rapid success of Nazi Germany turned into defeat. While virtually all explanations given of why Hitler lost the war are usually unconvincing or to superficial, this one can actually explain what really caused him to lose the war.

The brilliant thing about this DVD is that it includes interviews not with some historians that go on propagating their theories and assumptions, rather it includes rare intereviews of those at the highest levels of combat back in the actual 2nd World War.

What is really astonishing is that Hitler himself was the main cause of why the 2nd World War was lost by Germany. It was more than anything else his personality that prevented what in retrospect would most likely have been a quick victory for Nazi Germany. The 1st major mistake that Hitler made was that he believed that his invasion of Poland would not have any consequences. Hitler relied, as described by fighter ace Gallant, most of all on his foreign minister Ribbentrop who claimed that G.B. & France would not declare war on Germany over a German attack on Poland, especially since Germany had just 1 week before concluded the important Nazi-Soviet Neutrality Pact which meant that Germany was thus officially allied to Stalin’s Soviet Union. When Hitler did attack Poland in Sept. 1939, while Stalin attacked Poland from the East, Hitler was totally surprised that G.B. & France would declare war on Germany only 2 days later, on the 3rd of September. This was the first big mistake that Hitler made. He had firmly believed that the allies (G.B. & France) would stay out of his war with Poland. As one of the interviewer’s stated, Hitler had counted on a little private war with Poland! This changed the course of history and of course started the 2nd World War that would result in the deaths of more than 50 million people.

The 2nd big mistake that Hitler made was at Dunkirk where some 300 000 British and French troopes were stuck due to Hitler’s immensly successful tank invasion through the Ardenne’s forst that seperated France from Germany. By using this strategy he actually cut off the British and French armies that were supposed to fight the German’s in Belgium and Holland, as they expected the Germans to conduct their main tank assault in those neighboring countries. Once these armies were stuck in Dunkirk the German army and airforce had the chance of finishing them off. Realizing this danger the British sent in all their ships and boats that they could assemble to rescue those troops and move them out of harms way back into G.B. Hitler and the high German command now had the untold chance of a lifetime to destroy the entire British Expeditionary force holed up in Dunkirk. But to virtually everyone’s surprise on the German side Hitler actually halted the attack on the British and French troops in Dunkirk. He delays and wastes precious time, until he makes the somewhat strange decision to use his airforce to bomb the forces at Dunkirk. But this decision was clearly a terrible one, since the British immediately send in their Royal Airforce to protect their troops at Dunkirk. This first airforce battle between Germany and Great Britain was clearly won by the British as they destroyed many German aircraft, so that the British troops could be successfully evacuated from Dunkirk. This was a huge mistake by Hitler, had he sent in his army it would have been very likely that it would have smashed the British and French forces in Dunkirk by itself, as it had done before by smashing through the French defenses when Germany quickly invaded France in May 10th 1940, without encountering much resistance!

The next big mistake that Hitler made was not to attack G.B. with a simultaneous amphibious invasion. Had he used his airforce in combination with his ground forces a successful invasion would have been quite likely. This is also what a commander of the Royal Airforce said in an interview in this DVD. He actually claimed that G.B. didn’t really win the “Battle of Britain” in 1940 it was rather that the Germany airforce (Luftwaffe) had lost it. Again it was Hitler, who against the advice of some of his best officers, decided to delay and deferr this invasion of Britain that could have changed the outcome of the war completely. As Adolf Gallant the renowned fighter ace said in the DVD, when he met Hitler and Gallant advised him to quickly seize the oppertunity to bomb and invade Britain, Hitler literally said that he didn’t want to hear any of this. He was an Anglophile and believed that the English were to be compared to the Germans in terms of their ranking in his mind, he didn’t want a war with G.B. and thus he crucially delayed the invasion of Britain. When he finally decided (probably also because the high command was pressuring him to invade) to attack he used the airforce inadequately. Often the German pilots were ordered to attack rather useless targets such as civilian cities, which were of no strategic value in the war. And even worse for the Nazi’s: when the Luftwaffe was actually on the verge of finally defeating the Royal Airforce Hitler again halted their attacks! A retired Royal Airfore commander is actually quoted in this DVD with the words: “we were virtually defeated, and then the Attack was stopped”. Even before when right after the British evacuation of their 300 000 troops in Dunkirk, he said that had Hitler attacked then, it would most likely have been the end of G.B. since they had hardly had any weapons to fight the Nazi’s at that point in time. Again Hitler made the crucially wrong decisions to halt a very successful attack on Britain, with the result that Germany could not complete the war by defeating G.B. and thus probably ending the war in its favor.

The next blunder that Hitler made is well known and its his invasion of the Soviet Union (22nd June 1941). Here the authors of the DVD contend that his or rather the German plans for the invasion were not well developed because it wasen’t clear where to strike first and what targets to take first. For example, there was much debate during the invasion by the German high command whether to take Moscow first or whether to move South or North. Actually Hitler changed his views: first it seemed that he wanted to gain territory in the Ukrain, and then he moved his troops toward the north, then changed the plan again by trying to take Moscow. The big mistake was not going towards Moscow with full force from the beginning as all the communication went through this city, and having conquered Moscow would have been a political as well as strategic victory for the Germans. Also in the Ukrain Hitler quickely lost this big region because he came down harsh on the local population there that was opposed to Stalin! Had Hitler been wiser and used this resentment of the Ukrainians who despised Stalin and the Communists the chances for a victory against Stalin would have been a lot better.

One would think that these would have been all the grave mistakes that Hitler would make during the war, but there were even more to follow as this DVD shows.

For example, when the US & British bomber fleets (usually 1000 strong) were raiding Germany and causing heavy destruction by raining down their lethal bombs on German cities, Hitler could have seriously disrupted and perhaps even virtually stopped this onslaught! Gallant claims that the German airforce had gotten an amazing air superiority fighter by the end of 1943: the Messerschmidt 262, usually known as the ME 262. This was the first ever produced jet fight aircraft, capable for outflying all allied fighters by about 150 Miles per hour in terms of speed. According to Gallant, who flew this increadible fighter, it was like an angel in the sky and made the other allied planes seem like they were literally standing like balloons in the sky! The Me 262 was part of the new “wonder” weapons that Hitler had ordered. It was capable, according to Gallant, of regaining the initiate in the air war over Germany. Gallant says in the DVD that with 100 of these fighters the German airforce could have shot down 200 allied aircraft (mainly bombers) A DAY !!! Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about airwar would have known that this would have meant the rapid end of the allied bombing campaign over Germany. It would have turned the airwar around and made it possible for Germany to at least get a better deal when it came to ending the war. But again it was Hitler who objected to such a sensible plan! He wanted, as he claimed, a bomber capable of bombing the allies! But this dosen’t make any military sense at all! A bomber fleet of ME 262’s (they could carry 2 bombs, not much) would have been senseless without the ability to destroy the US and British fighters & bombers that continually bombed German cities. And where was this ME 262 bomber fleet supposed to attack, in G.B., if that was the plan then again some other fighters would have to clear the sky of US & British fighters that would surely have prevented any bomber fleet from getting past them to G.B. ! Again, it was Hitler that prevented a very effective attack on US & British bombers & fighters by not allowing the ME 262’s to be produced in the numbers needed for such a mission, and by keeping the few ME 262’s mostly away from the US & British bomber fleets that were pounding Germany day and night since 1944. Gallant says that he seriously considered first escaping Germany but that the only escape possible was to the East, meaning the Soviet war zone, and that was clearly undesirable, then he considered to committ suicide. Ultimately he was put back in charge of the Me 262 attack squads, but the war was lost, once again due to Hitler’s terrible decisions.

In all of this it is amazing that Hitler wasen’t some kind of double agent who prevented Nazi Germany from achieving a fast and glorious victory in the 2nd World War. But as the DVD makes clear it was his incompetence more than anything else that made Germany lost the war! IN that sense the world was lucky that Germany had Adolf Hitler & Germany was equally unlucky that they had him as their leader.
